Energy-Based Devices for Body Contouring

This study, published in the journal Dermatologic Clinics (2026), examines the current state of energy-based devices for minimally invasive body contouring.

Non-surgical fat and skin treatments have jumped 77 percent since 2019, partly because so many people are losing weight quickly on GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy and are left with loose skin, uneven fat, or cellulite. These "energy-based" devices use cold, heat, sound waves, magnetic fields, or lasers to reshape the body without a scalpel. They are not substitutes for liposuction or a tummy tuck, but they can be excellent for small, targeted improvements with little to no downtime.

Energy-Based Devices for Body Contouring.

For Unwanted Fat

Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting)

This treatment freezes fat cells at −10°C. Your body clears the destroyed cells over several months.

Results are permanent but gradual, and multiple sessions are usually needed. This may not be appropriate if you are obese, pregnant, have had abdominal hernia surgery, or have cold-sensitive conditions like Raynaud's. Another rare complication is paradoxical fat growth, where a firm lump forms instead of shrinkage.

HIFEM (Emsculpt-Type Devices)

This uses magnetic energy to force intense muscle contractions—like doing thousands of crunches in 30 minutes—while also breaking down fat. Studies show about a 19 percent reduction in belly fat in one month. It also builds muscle in some cases.

However, this treatment may be off-limits if you have a pacemaker, an IUD with metal, seizures, or are pregnant.

Laser Lipolysis

This treatment heats fat with a near-infrared laser. The newer high-power version (1060 nm) can reduce fat by about 21 percent, with results lasting at least six months. Sessions typically take only 20 minutes.

It’s important to avoid treatment over tattoos, scars, or areas of prior surgery.

For Loose Skin

Radiofrequency (RF)

This includes devices like Thermage and the injectable/needle-based versions many practices offer. It uses electromagnetic heat to stimulate new collagen and elastin. It’s generally safe for all skin tones.

Sessions usually run 30 to 90 minutes, and results appear gradually over two to six months. Around 71 to 97 percent of patients report satisfaction. However, this may not be for people who are pregnant, have cancer, autoimmune disease, or metal implants.

Intense Focused Ultrasound (Ultherapy-Type)

This uses focused sound waves to heat deeper tissue and tighten skin. Some pain during treatment is common. Results build over two to three months.

For Cellulite

Acoustic wave therapy

This treatment sends pressure waves through the skin to break down fibrous bands and boost collagen. It’s generally well-tolerated and takes about 30 minutes per session. However, multiple sessions are needed for long-lasting results.

Acoustic Subcision

This treatment is newer and stronger. A single, one-hour session can reduce cellulite scores by about 30 percent, with results lasting up to a year.

RF microneedling and 1440-nm lasers are also effective, especially for dimpling that hasn't responded to lifestyle changes.

For Muscle Tone

HIFEM is currently the only FDA-cleared way to grow muscle without exercise. Studies show a 19 percent increase in muscle thickness and a 10 percent narrowing of postpartum belly separation (diastasis recti) at one year.

The Honest Bottom Line

  • These treatments are best for small, targeted problems, such as a stubborn love handle, mild jowling, cellulite on the thighs, or muscle tone after weight loss.

  • They do not lower BMI or replace surgery. If you need major reshaping, liposuction, a tummy tuck, or a body lift will do more.

  • Side effects are usually mild—redness, bruising, temporary soreness—and clear up in a few days.

  • Set realistic expectations. Most devices require several sessions, and results are gradual.

  • They pair well with each other. A well-designed plan often combines fat reduction, skin tightening, and muscle work rather than relying on one device.

Take-Home Message

Energy-based devices do not replace surgery. However, they play a distinct role for patients who cannot or are not willing to pursue a surgical solution.

In my practice, these devices have become a valuable adjunct to other minimally invasive procedures.  For instance, liposuction is effective at reducing fat, but it does not affect the resulting excess skin.  Utilizing BodyTite Turbo in conjunction with liposuction can help to cause skin contraction in a way that was previously unattainable. The results are so impressive that I rarely perform liposuction alone.

While there are countless energy-based devices on the market today, I feel that the best data and results have been shown with the Inmode IgniteRF platform. I utilize this technology for radiofrequency microneedling (Morpheus8), radiofrequency-assisted contouring of the face and neck (FaceTite Turbo), and radiofrequency-assisted contouring of the body (BodyTite Turbo).
