Liposuction surgery begins with fluid inserted into desired fat removal areas. This will allow for less pain, bruising, and bleeding. Additionally, this method separates fat cells and allows easier removal. A cannula is then introduced through small incisions and excess fat is suctioned free. A vacuum device is used to remove excess fat cells from beneath the skin with the help of the cannula. During suctioning, the surgeon moves the cannula back and forth to break up fat cells. Power-assisted options are available, but do not necessarily result in improved cosmetic results. Liposuction surgery usually takes 1-3 hours depending on the number of sites needing treatment and either local or general anesthesia is administered.
